Building raised garden beds on the cheap..

Building raised garden beds on the cheap …

My hubby and I came up with a reasonable way to make a raised garden bed.  Here is what you will need:

9 landscape timbers ( we bought ours at Home Depot ) on sale for  2 bucks each.

Large nails

Miter saw

1. Cut three of the timbers in half – they are eight feet long.

2. Miter cut the corners and nail two shorts to two longs – you will have planters measuring 8x4 approx.

3. Nail the first rectangle to the second rectangle, to the third rectangle.

4. Add dirt ( a rusty ol tractor makes this real quick !)

5. Plant away !

My hubby used some pc tubes to make a sprinkler system.

I am not a gardener so I'm wondering... why do people make raised garden beds? Is there a benefit to it? Curious.

Ha, ha to what Susan said. Funny lady!!
I should put in a watering system this year. Chances of me remembering to water before work are slim to none. Sigh.

Di, raised beds are easier to weed and care for. We're putting some in this year (I hope...we live down the road from Small Home).

They are smaller so you can reach across to weed instead of walking down them, easier to water, etc. In general, they are easier to plant and care for...more produce from smaller footprint. When the season is over, you can put newspaper down on the dirt, put black trash bags over them and leave for the winter. Keeps the weeds down and it's ready for planting in the spring.

Kammy, I have watneed to do raised beds for several years now. The problem is the critters. THen, I realized we have a fenced dog pen and no dogs. I could add a bed there and feel safe from the wildlife. It's too late here to add the beds this year, but I'll remember your post for the next. Happy Gardening!

This looks wonderful. I have tomato plants, okra, cucumbers, etc. in my flower beds. Next year, I will try your method. I came across your blog about a week ago and spent one entire day looking at your posts. My friend and I have a booth at a local Peddlers Mall and we are always looking for items. You have so many good ideas on how to fix stuff up, etc. I went right out and bought some ORB.
Thanks for all the good tips. You are so talented and I love your blog.

These are lovely raised beds. I've been wanting to make some of these for a while now but I didn't seem to find the right material. This is just what I was looking for! And your tomato plants look great in them too!

Beautiful garden. And so smart to put those golden yellow flowers in, sorry the name just slipped my mind as I was about to write it. It will bring you much pleasure and veges!

Nice beds, I will have to keep this in mind...I filled my small bed on the side, so I'm trying everything else in containers this year on the deck. Can't wait to see what you put in.

Kammy,
These raised beds look great! When my ancient redwood boxes rot away, I'm going to make new boxes just like these. Of course, we don't have any rusty old tractors laying around! Could you give a few more details, like how you nailed the layers together.

Hello Kammy ~I wanted to stop by to reconnect. I've had a few absences from blogging and have lost touch with some of my friends.
With the summer sunshine in our midst...it motivates the culinary juices, especially with the abundance of fresh fruit and veggies that we wait with baited breath to sprout up.
Don't you love the palette of colors from all the flowers that are in bloom. Their fragrance is intoxicating...almost as much as the pies we'll be baking.

I hope you can stroll by so we can reacquaint ourselves.

Sweet wishes,
Sara
