Kitchen remodel decorated for fall

It is time to show everyone my kitchen remodel. This kitchen began it’s life in 1988. We began the remodel in 2007 It is about 95 % complete….I still need to buy a fridge (black) I know , I know….why can’t Kammy just spray paint the one she has….I would but, it is just not big enough…LOL.  I was all prepared to purchase a new fridge this fall but, had to replace my new dishwasher already….errrrrrr. Yes, I have learned my lesson about warranties (I should always buy them for expensive products) and research –not just the consumer reports. My hubby and I did the complete remodel ourselves except for hanging the cabinets, putting up the backsplash in tile and a friend helped with the taping and mudding of the drywall. Yes , this was a down to the studs complete re-model. We have done all of it on a budget all for about $12,000 and without a 2nd mortgage.

232323232%7Ffp352%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3234%3B36%3A34%3A64nu0mrj I can’t believe I am posting these UGLY pictures. Now keep in mind we were starting to empty cupboards so everything is a MESS. Everything got demolished. We built archways to define the rooms –notice in this picture the straight entryway. This entryway used to have my washer and dryer – a horrible place. We added on my “studio” (a.k.a. my creative place)and put in a closet for the washer and dryer. 232323232%7Ffp387%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D323576%3A657488nu0mrj 232323232%7Ffp382%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D323576%3A65748%3Bnu0mrj  This is a close up of the cabinets – pretty yucky ,huh ? Fake wood baby..232323232%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2338%3D368%3D78%3B%3DXROQDF%3E232368%3A526763ot1lsi

232323232%7Ffp38%3B%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D32358744%3A6%3C%3B4nu0mrj New window and sliding door. Appliances and sink moved to better locations. Extra studs in the walls added. Electrical re-wired. Propane stove switched over to electric – propane is super expensive and I wanted the ease of cleaning a flat top stove.232323232%7Ffp396%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D32358744%3A4%3A84nu0mrj

232323232%7Ffp396%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D32358744%3A7375nu0mrj This is the only picture of me , that I took myself. We worked hours upon hours for months. Would I do it again…probably not. Notice things like the lovely florescent lights ? The ceiling was not deep enough for canned lighting, so we went with track lighting.232323232%7Ffp393%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D32358744%3A736%3Anu0mrj

232323232%7Ffp397%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D32358744%3A4%3A93nu0mrj  I apologize for the Elk head – We live in Colorado and my hubby hunts…. Below is a picture of the arch my hubby added to the short hall. The door to the left if the main bathroom. We added a linen closet also. The other door at the end is a small bedroom and the door to the left is another bedroom. Remember I live in a small home. My square footage is not quite 1500.

232323232%7Ffp393%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D32358744%3A7373nu0mrj See my lovely light fixture – NOT. My hubby added the arch to the short hallway and also the large arch separating the living room from the dining room.  The living room is next to be stripped down to studs and flipped.232323232%7Ffp392%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3235%3A9789%3B99%3Bnu0mrj  The kitchen cabinets are Kemper – this is the same company who makes Thomasville cabinets. They are solid oak and I got the dove tail drawers. I also upgraded the drawer fronts to match the door which cost me an extra $750 which I thought was worth it. The cabinets were the most expensive part of the remodel costing $9000.00 – that was with a 10% off sale.  I have a cookie sheet cabinet and the drawers left of the stove pull out for pots and pans. I have looked at model homes for fun from time to time and I am now a Cabinet Snob – I always have to pull out the drawers and open the doors to see how they are made. It surprises me that homes selling for $600,000.00 range , sometimes have very cheap cabinets. Yes, I am a Cabinet Snob…..232323232%7Ffp393%3Enu%3D3247%3E277%3E69%3A%3EWSNRCG%3D3235%3A9789%3B99%3Anu0mrj  The cabinet man tried to talk me out of the corner kitchen appliance – he said they take up too my space. I wanted one and love it. I learned that if I like it and want it , I will be happy. I store my food processer and other items in it. I got probably 7 estimates on my cabinets. I am happy I did get many estimates because I got several ideas on what I wanted. The large corner area is called “City Scape” because of the staggered heights. I designed the layout.2007 003 Appliances in and before the backsplash was done. We did not do granite – as it would have been 1/2 our budget. We got a laminate (free with the purchase of the cabinets – I really shopped the deals) and we can update the counter tops at a later time. I do love the color of the counter. I would have loved a farmhouse apron sink –but they at least a grand. I bought a swanstone sink a super big one – at least as big as a farmhouse apron sink and a 1/4 of the price. I love it because I can fit whole cookie sheets in it. I never used the double sink much before. I have had lots of compliments on my sink – especially from men – LOL ! If I hand wash dishes, I just put a big pan on one side to do the rinsing – easy peasey. I also got a button on the sink for the garbage disposal. This is the first garbage disposal I have ever had – I love it.064 The floors of course were not level – we had to lay a concrete type leveling compound through out the kitchen. This was a 3 day job –and I might add a major pain in the behind.

073

026 012 My new Kitchen Aid dishwasher if in….Short story I purchased LG appliances and have had MAJOR problems with all 3 – all of course after the warranty ended. I will not buy LG appliances again – EVER.035

023 The kitchen island is a Martha Stewart from K-mart. I bought it a couple of years ago – painted it black of course. I had it in my studio but, decided to add it to my kitchen. I have new “used” furniture for my studio and they are awaiting their makeovers ! I know I should take pictures of a “neutral” season – maybe after the first of the year – maybe after I finally get that French door BLACK fridge…maybe someday.

Hugs ~ Kammy

Absolutely fabulous Kammy. You guys did a great job. It is showroom worthy. Damned cabinet guys always try to talk us out of what we want. I dumped two over they way they did that and didn't listen to what I was saying and we went with an old guy who suggested a few things but never ever tried to tell me what I wanted was the wrong thing.
Good to know about your appliances. My laptop is an LG and so far it has been okay, about 4 years.
Once again kudos to you on your great remodel.

So much hard and beautiful work!

I really like how the colors of the cabinets, counter, and back splash play off of each other.

I also really love your light fixture!

Oh, Kammy! How beautiful your kitchen turned out to be! I know you're enjoying it so much. You probably saved a lot of money since you and your hubby di it! Oh, I'm so proud of you!

I LOVE your makeover, Kammy! It is really a wonderful job that you've done! Your pictures look like they belong in a magazine, you and your husband must be so proud!
Doesn't it feel so good? What a sense of accomplishment you must have!
Kudos!
I love it all!
And your counter tops look like granite! Good choice on the color/pattern.
I'm a cabinet snob too! When we did our kitchen over (seven years ago now!) I made sure we went high-end on that too!
And I hunted high and low for a granite apron front sink (they wanted well over a grand!), I got lucky and found a small no-name company online that got me one from overseas for a few hundred (including shipping!). When the granite guys came to put in the counters they were in awe! They couldn't believe the deal I got on the sink.
Wish I had done that same shopping around like you with the cabinets! It pays to do your homework.

Really beautiful job!
All the best,
Eileen

Your kitchen is gorgeous and I love the way you've decorated it too. My kitchen needs a similar make over but I can't find anyone to do it for me so far. I have been trying for years to get someone interested in doing what I want and it's so hard. I keep hoping. Meanwhile, your post has inspired me again. One day I will get it done, I will, will, will.

Wow your kitchen looks fantastic - yo have both done so well - what a pair of hard workers you are. I realy like the cabinets they do look quality. We are hoping to re do our kitchen next year but we have less than a quarter of your budget so our cabinets will have to be cheap! I am just looking oforward to getting rid of a kitchen that must have been here for about 30 years !

It's gorgeous and $9K for cabinets is very reasonable and very good. My DH is a cabinetmaker and I'm like you...I've walked into very expensive homes and the cheap cabinets they put up and charge the earth for....and I am sure you know the name of the local cabinetmakers that start with a "T"...they have the market with high end custom homes in the area cornered (for now), and they are really cheap (and expensive!). We've gone into homes for new kitchens & seen the ones that came with the house...and gone in a fixed their crap, replaced door fronts, made fridge panels, etc.

Looks really nice~

I LOVE that you have done this on such a budget. Fab work Kammy! I've seen some people add beadboard or paneling to a fridge to make it bearable. It might be worth a shot until you can spring for the one you want. (I got a black french door/ bottom freezer for our house when we moved in. But all other appliances were part of the deal.) Darn thing cost more than anything else in the house! Go figure.

I hope you get what you love soon!

We are in process of remodeling our kitchen, too. We started in April. We hope to be done Oct 8th. Yours looks gorgeous. I really like what you did.

That is an awesome transformation. And the fact that you guys did most of the work yourselves - wow - my hat is off to you! Good job!

Wow!! You did a fantastic job woman! I'm jealous, lol. I love the black butcher block island too:) Black is also my favorite color and I love the plant stand next to the fridge with the pumpkin arrangement. Nice!
